De-shedding help at The Pet Retreat

Why does my dog shed hair?

The majority of dog breeds will shed hair. It’s a natural process that can vary depending on the breed of your dog and the time of year. It can also depend on the health of the dog and the food it is eating. Some breeds can develop a thick undercoat during the winter and shed more frequently when the weather gets warmer, such as German Shepherds, Akitas and Huskies. Other breeds could potentially shed all year round for example, Bulldogs or Dalmatians.

Shedding is a normal function which is designed to maintain your dog’s coat and skin in a healthy condition. There are ways which shedding can be controlled and minimised. Regular grooming either at home or professionally, can help minimise shedding, as it is easier to keep on top of the hair rather than letting it build up.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]

Controlling shedding at The Pet Retreat

At The Pet Retreat, we have many treatments to help keep control on shedding. We offer a de-shed treatment on top of your groom for only £8.50, which includes a shampoo and condition in our fantastic Earthbath Shed Control Shampoo and Conditioner. The shampoo is designed to take hold of the loose and dead hair to keep on top of the shedding. Not only does the package help with shedding, the ingredients included are also designed to nourish and rejuvenate coats and is also soap free. This package leaves your dog’s coat feeling soft and nourished and also leaves a lovely green tea scent.

After a lovely relaxing bath, we would use a high powered dryer to disturb any more loose hair to ensure maximum effect, before ending with the finishing dryer, which gently removes dead or loose coat by brushing through.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”1953″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]

What brushes are best to use?

After your dog’s shedding treatment, we would use a coat specific brush depending on the coat and breed of your dog to remove excess coat. For short haired dogs, we would use a rubber brush to ensure not to damage any living hair. These are available in the salon for £5.75 and they are an effective method for removing loose coat. For medium and long coated dogs it would be beneficial to brush through using a furminator and/or a comb.

These treatments that we offer, and also everyday grooming at home, should be done regularly to ensure that the dead coat will not build up. In extreme circumstances this could cause a few problems as the build up of hair could stop air circulating around the skin, so it is best to keep on top of a shedding coat to ensure your pet stays happy and healthy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
